Does the global vaccination situation mirror the world’s inequalities? Der Spiegel on “Vaccine Apartheid”

“THE SPEEDY development of covid-19 vaccines speaks to the best of humanity’s qualities: resilience, ingenuity and the ability to jointly overcome problems. Their distribution, however, reflects less well on the species” Via the Spiegel International

As Marco Evans points out, “only 2 percent of the 1.3 billion people who live in Africa have been vaccinated”. In “Vaccine Apartheid”,  via Spiegel International, read about how the vaccine distribution troubles are showing that the world’s inequality issue is getting worse.

“In Africa, though, the numbers are far, far worse. Only 3.5 percent of eligible Kenyans have received a jab, 1.3 percent of Nigerians and just 0.09 percent of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. More than 1.3 billion people live on the continent, and less than 2 percent of them have been completely vaccinated. Critics are furious about the “vaccine apartheid” and condemn the “vaccine nationalism” of wealthy industrialized countries (…) Even now, after so many doses have been administered, the global vaccination campaign continues to mirror our world’s inequalities. Rich countries are already vaccinating adolescents and are planning third doses for adults of all ages.”
